モノを考えるのは脚なのではないかと思う。歩いているときにアイデアがひらめいたり考えがまとまる事が多いんです。脳はそれを整理しているだけなんじゃないか。だからそうとう歩きます。ひきこもって描かなければならないときは無理だけれども、そうでないときは一日中歩いたり。立ち止まったりいろんなものを観察したりしながら歩いているので、ペースはまちまちです。いろんな発見もあって、それを元に、エピソードにふくらませた事を漫画に描くようになりました。出だしの部分とかだいたいの感じが決まるまでは、歩きながら考えます。歩いているうちに雑多なものが浮かんだり消えたり。見えてきたり。それをきゅっとまとめるのは、白い紙の前でやるんです。
北千住に住んでいた時、上野の博物館でアイデアを考えてみようと思ったんですが、ダメでした。博物館の中って、誰かが整理したものが並んでいる。それはそれで楽しく、勉強にはなるんだけれども、森の中とか、なんでもない道を歩いている方が、雑多なところの方が自分の考えが出てくると気付きました。
I have the feeling that I think with my feet. It often happens that while I’m walking, I get inspiration and my thoughts come together. It seems my brain is merely putting those ideas into an order. That’s why I walk a lot. I can’t walk when I have to shut myself away and draw, but when I’m not busy drawing, I spend all day walking. I don’t walk at a fixed pace, because now and then I stand still, or I look around at various things. I discover lots of things, and I’ve come to develop those discoveries into episodes and draw them into my manga. I walk and think until I’ve got a rough idea of the start of a story. While I’m walking, a jumble of ideas appear and disappear. Ideas come to me. Then I sit down with a blank sheet of paper and arrange those ideas.
When I was living in Kitasenju, I tried coming up with ideas in the museum in Ueno, but that didn’t work. Museums are full of things that someone has already put into order. They’re interesting and you can learn a lot, but I noticed that my ideas flow more freely when I’m walking in a forest or some nondescript road, somewhere that’s disordered.

Daisuke Igarashi (Comic artist)
Made his debut in 1993 in Monthly Afternoon. He uses his superb drawing skills and delicate detail to portray the world of nature. In 2004, his manga Witches received an Excellence Prize in the manga division of the Japan Media Arts Festival run by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. In 2009, Children of the Sea received an Award for Excellence at the 38th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards and received an Excellence Prize in the manga division of the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival run by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. In 2012, Igarashi published his first manga collection, The Sea Animal and Tamashii.
