私の実家は、富士山の斜面上にあるんです。富士山を見ると、あの中に自分の家があると感じます。空気が透き通っている冬の間12月〜3月頃、登山道入口から真正面に富士山を見ることができます。
地元の人には登山道と呼ばれるところで、毎日富士登山をしているようでした。坂道なので、行きはいいけど帰りはとても大変。実は、ちゃんと登ったことはないんです。あまりに身近にあるので、登って制覇する対象というよりは、家そのものなんですよね。天気を知るにも、富士山に傘がかぶっていたら雨が降るといったように生活の一部でした。子どもの頃はあたりまえすぎて意識していなかったのですが、大人になって帰省すると、こんなに毎日富士山に向かっていたというのは、ちょっと不思議な環境だったのだなと思います。
カルチャースクールで街歩きをしている時、目白の富士見坂にいって富士山のほうを眺めたりもします。いまは建物が多く、見えなくなってしまったのですが、遠くにいても富士山を感じることで、郷愁を誘います。『電車でめぐる富士山の旅ー御殿場・富士宮・富士吉田・清水へ』という本を執筆中は、富士という文字を見るだけでも、グッときてしまって。三角形のモノを見るだけでも、富士山に見えてしまったり。まさに、富士山病ですね。
いい道には、いいお店があります。『GUCHIPAN』のクリームパンや『長崎屋洋菓子店』の富士サブレなど、帰省した際には必ず立ち寄ります。お店をマーキングしながら歩くと、看板の面白さやお店に行き交うお客さんの違いを楽しむことができるんです。
道のゴールとなっている山宮浅間神社は、富士山に登る前に身を清める場所です。富士山というのは、綺麗なだけでなく、近づけば近づくほど怖い感じもある。ある時は穏やかで女性的であったり、荒々しい男性的な時もあります。そのさまざまな表情の変化に、人の手が及ばない自然のチカラを感じるんです。
A Place Taken for Granted
My family home is located on the slopes of Mount Fuji. Whenever I look at the mountain, I feel like my home is inside it. From December to March when the winter air is clear, you can see Mount Fuji straight ahead from the mountain climbing trail entrance.
My house is located on what locals call the ‘mountain climbing trail’ where it felt like you were climbing Mount Fuji everyday. Since it is on a sloped street, going down is easy, but your way back is quite tough. I’ve actually never properly climbed Mount Fuji. Since it is too familiar, rather than being an object to climb and conquer, for me it is home itself. Even when it came to predicting the weather, it was part of daily life to just know that it was going to rain if there was a cap cloud on Mount Fuji. I took it for granted when I was a child, but whenever I return to my hometown as an adult, I realize how unusual it is to have faced Mount Fuji everyday.
When I walk around town at the culture school, I occasionally go to Fujimizaka in Mejiro to look towards Mount Fuji. Today, many buildings are blocking the view, but feeling Mount Fuji even from far away brings about a sense of nostalgia. When I was writing a book called “Densha de Meguru Fujisan no Tabi: Gotemba, Fujinomiya, Fujiyoshida, Shimizu e,” I would get emotional by just looking at the word “Fuji.” I would even see Mount Fuji just by looking at triangular things. I am truly Mount Fuji obsessed.
Good streets have good shops. I always stop by for custard buns at GUCHIPAN and Fuji sables from Nagasakiya Pastry Shop on my way home. As you walk and mark the shops, you can enjoy the differences in shop signs and customers who come and go.
Yamamiya Asama Shrine, which serves as the goal of this road, is where you purify yourself before climbing Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is not only just beautiful – there is also a sense of terror as you get closer and closer. At times, it is calm and feminine, but other times you see it is rough and masculine. Through the changes in its various expressions, I feel the power of nature that is beyond human grasp.
