静寂につつまれる湖畔の道
A Lakeside Road Enveloped in Silence
脇道にそれることで物語はリアルになる
芦ノ湖でもあまり人に知られていない白浜へ向かう道です。湖畔の反対側は観光地として栄えていますが、こちら側はハイキングロードとして整備はされているものの人が少ない。車があまり来ない所なので、犬を連れて散歩するにも適した道です。
小説を書く時、物語の結末は大体決まっているので、設計図通りに向かえば簡単です。道も同じで、普通は目的地へ行くまでの最短距離を探しますよね。でも、交番に行きたかったのに思いもよらない道に入ってしまい、気が付くと山の上にいて想像もしなかった景色をみることになる。そうやって脇道にそれていくことで、物語は現実に近づくんです。自分たちのリアルな人生と同じ。小説で描きたいのはそういうことなんです。だから道を歩くにも、普段から目的地はあるけれど、回り道をするようにしています。
The Story Becomes Real When It Goes Off-road
It is a road that takes you to Shirahama, which is a lesser-known beach in Lake Ashi. The opposite side of the lake has become popular as a tourist destination, but this side has fewer people, even though the road has been paved for hiking. It is a perfect spot to bring your dog for a walk, since it has very little traffic.
When writing a novel, you decide roughly on how the story is going to end, so it is easy as long as you follow the plan accordingly. The idea of a road is similar to this, because you would usually look for the shortest distance to get to any destination. But, let’s say on your way to the police box, you unexpectedly get sidetracked and find yourself at the top of a mountain, discovering a view that is out of the world. The story gets closer to reality when things start to go off-road. The same goes for our real lives. This is what I want to illustrate in my novels. So, even with a usual destination in mind, I prefer to take the long roads.

Ko Machida (author)
Author and musician. Born 1962 in Osaka. Since high school, Machida has performed under the name Machizo Machida. He made his album debut in 1981 as vocalist for the rock band INU. His first novel “Kussun Daikoku” won him the Noma Literary Newcomer Prize in 1997, and he received the Akutagawa Prize in 2000 for “Kiregire.” He also received the Tanizaki Prize in 2005 for “Confession” and the Noma Literary Prize for “Visiting Inns” in 2008. Machida’s other literary works such as “Meoto-jawan,” “Punk Samurai Slash Down,” “Neko ni Kamakete,” and many more.
